Council adopts three Bills amid din

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, APRIL 1. The Legislative Council today passed three important Bills at the fag end of its 102nd session without any debate amidst a dharna by the BJP and the Janata Dal (United ) members who raised slogans against the State Government for refusing to move a resolution condemning the Andhra Pradesh Government for taking up illegal irrigation projects in the Krishna Basin.

The Bills, which were passed amidst the din, were the Karnataka Advocates Welfare Fund (Amendment) Bill, 2004, the Bangalore Development Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2005 and the Karnataka Land Reforms (Second Amendment) Bill, 2005.

The BJP members "Mukhyamantri" Chandru and Ramachandre Gowda, were continuously shouting slogans condemning the State Government's alleged insensitivity towards the feelings of the Opposition even when they raised important issues which affected the lives and interests of the people.

Earlier, the House which met after hours of parleys between the Government and the Opposition in the chamber of the Chairman, V.R. Sudarshan, following the dharna by the latter over Andhra Pradesh's irrigation projects issue, reassembled in the evening.

The Opposition members continued to remain in the well of the House.

The Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, H.K. Patil, and the Leader of the Opposition, D.H. Shankaramurthy, and the Janata Dal (U) Floor Leader, M.P. Nadagouda, stuck to their positions on the resolution leading to an impasse.

At this stage, the Chairman suggested to Mr. Patil to move the Karnataka Advocates Welfare Fund (Amendment) Bill 2004 which he did.

But Mr. Shankaramurthy objected when V.S. Ugrappa (Congress) started speaking on the Bill.
