CPI(M), CPI stand criticised

KOZHIKODE APRIL 1. The Yuva Janata Dal has said that the CPI(M) and CPI are trying to fool the people by criticising the amendments to the Patent Act, as both these parties had supported the same in the Lok Sabha. The CPI(M) and CPI leaders were organising demonstrations and issuing statements that the amendments would trigger price hike of life-saving drugs. If their protests were genuine then why did they support the legislation, K.N. Anil Kumar, Yuva Janata Dal Kozhikode general secretary asked. He also alleged that these parties had taken a similar stand in the agitation against the Coca-Cola company at Plachimada. After staying away from the agitation, they had jumped into the stir and tried to take over its leadership.

Award for vocalist

KANNUR APRIL 1. P.K. Sivakumar, vocalist, has been selected for the Kalaimamani Award of the Pondicherry Government for the year 2004. The award consists of a cash prize of Rs. 10,000, a gold sovereign and certificate, N. Sumathi, director of Art and Culture, said. Mr. Sivakumar is running the Sangeetha Gurukulam at Mahe.

Valuation camp postponed

KOTTAYAM April 1. The centralised valuation camp for BA, B.Sc. and B.Com. at St. Teresa's College for Women, scheduled to start on April 2, has been postponed to April 4, a Mahatma Gandhi University press note said. The change has been made in view of the local holiday declared by the authorities.

Municipal chairperson ousted

KOLLAM APRIL 1. The chairperson of the United Democratic Front (UDF) -ruled Punalur Municipal Council, Shaiba Shajehan, has been removed through a no-confidence motion moved by the Left Democratic Front.

The motion was supported by majority of the UDF members. Differences within the `I' group led to the development. In the 30-member council, there were 16 UDF members, 14 Congress and two Kerala Congress members. The no- confidence motion was passed by 27 votes to 1.

A Kerala Congress member abstained from voting; a vote cast by a Congress member was declared invalid. This means that twelve Congress members voted against Ms. Shajehan.

Kerala Press Academy chairman

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM APRIL 1. Thomas Jacob, Associate Editor of Malayala Manorama has been appointed chairman of the new general council of the Kerala Press Academy.

`Bhoomipooja' performed

The construction company Builders' Combines here is launching a new housing project `Seven Spades', near the St. Thomas School at Mukkola in the city. The `bhoomipooja' of this project for building independent villas was performed today.

SBT launches Malayalam website

The State Bank of Travancore (SBT) became the first bank to do so when it launched a Malayalam version of its website here today.

The website was designed by the Centre for Development of Imaging Technology. A website in Hindi too was launched at the function.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kerala, M.K. Ramachandran, and the Managing Director of the bank, Om Bhatt, launched the Malayalam and Hindi websites respectively.

Seminar

KOTTAYAM APRIL 1. The Kottayam Nature Society will hold a one-day seminar on `Alternatives to river sand in construction.' The keynote address will be delivered by P. K. Sivasankara Pillai. The seminar will be held at the CMS College auditorium on Sunday, according to B. Sreekumar, president of the society.

Drama

Kaliyarangu, the cultural organisation which has been championing the cause of classical art forms, will present Chakyarkooth at its monthly programme on Sunday. Margi Madhu Chakyar will present `Kiraathom' on the occasion. The presentation will be held at Sreerangom auditorium.

Security scheme

KOZHIKODE APRIL 1. Justice J.B. Koshy of the Kerala High Court will inaugurate an advocates' social security scheme here on April 2. The scheme envisaged by the Calicut Bar Association and the Trust for Advocates Social Security, Kozhikode (TASSK) is the first of its kind in the country. Justice R. Basant of the Kerala High Court will release the TASSK logo, according to a release from the TASSK chairman P.M. Mohammed Ali, and the president of the Calicut Bar Association, Sabi Joseph.

Demand

A meeting of CBSE schools organisation held at Sahodaya School Complex, Malabar Region, has demanded that the field publicity office branch in Kozhikode be maintained. The meeting of principals asked the Centre not to go ahead with its decision to close down the branch of the Directorate of Field Publicity here in view of the role played by it in creating awareness among school and college students.

IUML meet

KASARAGOD APRIL 1. Senior leaders of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) are expected to attend the three-day district conference of the party to be held here from April 12. The Thrikkaripur panchayat conference of the IUML will be held on April 12 and 13.

Inaugurated

PALAKKAD APRIL 1. The delegates' session of the 22nd district conference of Kerala Police Association was inaugurated by Revatha A. Chandrasekhar, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Thrissur Range, at Chembai Memorial Music College here today.

The public meeting organised as part of the district conference was inaugurated by M.N. Krishnamurthy, Inspector General of Police, Northern Range. The meeting was presided over by the district president of the association, K. Maniyan.

Campaign

KANNUR APRIL 1. The Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen (KNM) will launch a campaign against extremism and superstition in the district as part of its district conference on April 23 and 24.

New Principal

PATHANAMTHITTA APRIL 1. Prasad Thomas Kodiyatt, head of the Department of Zoology, has assumed charge as the new Principal of the Pathanamthitta Catholicate College today, following the reirement of Fr. K.T. Mathewkutty.

Office-bearers

The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) district committee held here today has elected K. Ashok Kumar as its district president. Vinod Thirumoolapuram, C.R. Anil Kallooppara and P.R. Ratheesh are the new vice-president, general secretary and secretary respectively of the organisation, according to an official statement of the BJYM issued here today.
