MANGALORE, APRIL 1. Five new block science centres will be set up in the districts of Raichur, Mysore, Mangalore, Dharwad and Davangere, with each centre being allocated Rs 6.5 crores. The work on the centres has started, the Minister for Science and Technology, Small Savings and Lotteries, Basavaraj Horatti, said here on Friday. A science park has also been sanctioned for Bangalore, for which the budget is nearly Rs. 70 crores. The cost will be shared equally by the State and the Centre, he said. Mr. Horatti told presspersons that besides the above centres, 20 rural science centres will be set up. "We have set up a committee headed by Scientist and former Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation U.R. Rao. The committee will soon submit a report on how to popularise scientific programs at village levels," he said. On the ban on single digit lotteries in the State, Mr. Horatti said: "Although the single-digit lottery scheme has been banned, many are still conducting it illegally. If we are not able to curb the same , the Government will not make Karnataka a lottery-free state, he said. Four thousand cases of illegal lottery transactions have been booked so far, he added.
