MANGALORE, APRIL 1. A group of three persons waylaid a trader and his assistant, attacked them with a machete and decamped with cash and other documents valued at Rs. 1.6 lakhs in the Mangalore South (Pandeshwar) police station limits on Friday. The group then fled in a car. According to police, Basheer, a resident of B.H. Road, Sagar in Shimoga taluk, and his assistant Udaya Gowda were proceeding to the Mangalore railway station to board an early morning train when a group of three persons, who came from behind attacked Udaya with a machete forcing him to drop the suitcase he was carrying. The group, which also assaulted Mr. Basheer, picked up the suitcase and fled in a car. The Mangalore South Police are investigating.
Two drown
Mohan Kumar (31), a resident of Kannur on the outskirts of the city, reportedly drowned at the breakwaters in New Mangalore Port on Thursday. Police said the victim's body was seen floating in the sea near the breakwaters. Panambur police have registered a case. A case of a person accidentally falling into an open well and drowning has been reported from Uppinangady town under Uppinangady police station limits on Friday. According to police, Govinda Naik (38) who had ventured near the well fell into it and was reportedly drowned. Police have registered a case on a complaint from Kalavathi, the victim's sister.
Cheating case
The Panambur police have registered a case of cheating against two persons working for a private firm at New Mangalore Port. According to complaint lodged by Mohideen Bawa, director of Fiza Developers and Intertrade Pvt. Ltd., Praveen and Santosh, in-charge of unloading consignment of iron ore fines at his yard on the Port premises, reportedly diverted three out of a dozen lorry loads to another yard while accounting it under his name. Mr. Bawa has claimed that their act has caused him a loss of Rs. 1.84 lakhs.
