TAMBARAM, APRIL 1. After a two-month lull, the "bureau puller" has struck. This time in Union Carbide Colony at Madipakkam. However, instead of taking away valuables, he relieved a woman, sleeping in the house, of her chain. Police sources said the woman kept the windows open. She and the other residents had gone to bed after collecting water. The burglar struck between 2.30 a.m. and 5.30 a.m., the police said. According to them, the thief first tried to open the bureau close to the window using a iron hook. When he failed, he removed the victim's 10-sovereign gold chain. Special teams, formed with handpicked officers, started combing Madipakkam, Adambakkam and Pazhavanthangal every night. The officers have been relieved of their regular duties at police stations.
Elusive operator
The `bureau puller' has become a thorn in the side of the police. His fingerprints lifted from the scene of crime do not match with any of the 1,000-odd prints collected by the police.
