Special art courses for school students likely

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, APRIL 1. Specialised courses in art and allocation of separate time for pursuing the art of their choice may just become possible for school students in future. The second meeting of the Central Advisory Board for Education (CABE) Sub-Committee on "Integration of culture education in the school curriculum'' on Thursday saw a general consensus emerge on the need for cultural awareness among students.

At the meeting attended by the CABE sub-committee members Javed Akhtar, Shubha Mudgal, Krishna Sobti, Vinod Raina, Kiran Seth and NCERT Director Prof. Krishna Kumar among others, it was felt that once the recommendations are finalised the students could get options to study art and culture through specialised courses. It was also suggested that students interested in art subjects be allocated separate time to pursue the courses of their choice in school curriculum.

Chaired by Gnanpeeth awardee U.R. Ananthamurthy, the meeting saw the experts suggest the use of indigenous cultural activities as it would mean not taking an elitist orientation but using what is available in the immediate environment of the child.

While expressing concern over the status of culture education in schools, the meeting also decided that these activities would reflect pluralistic cultures of India. Details of integrating culture education into the education curriculum will, however, be worked out in detail later.
