`Sensitise students on courses, careers'

SALEM, APRIL 2. Experts in special education and rehabilitation insisted that school students should be sensitised about the courses and careers available in the field of special education.

A seminar on `Career Opportunities in the field of Special Education and Rehabilitation,' organised by the Department of Special Education of Avinashilingam Deemed University in Coimbatore, in collaboration with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), New Delhi was organised here at the Golden Gates Matriculation Higher Secondary School recently.

Addressing the seminar, the zonal committee member, Southern Zone - II of RCI, Premavathi Vijayan, said that the 10th five-year plan had put the requirement of trained professionals to serve the population with disability at 7.20 lakh. A concerted effort had to be taken to create awareness among the school leaving students to opt for a career in special education and rehabilitation, she added.

Audiologists and speech therapists, clinical psychologists, hearing aid and ear mould technicians, rehabilitation engineers and technicians, special teachers for education and training of handicapped, speech pathologists, rehabilitation psychologists, rehabilitation practitioners in mental retardation, orientation and mobility specialists and community based rehabilitation professions were some the careers available in the field of special education, she listed.

The lecturer in the department, G.Victoria Naomi, traced the career advancement in special education and rehabilitation. "Heads of schools and teachers should make students aware of the courses and opportunities available in the field," she reiterated.

Assistant Educational Officers, heads of the schools, special educators and rehabilitation professionals attended the seminar.
