Tirunelveli
By Our Staff Reporter
TIRUNELVELI, APRIL 2. Alleging violation of norms in finalising tenders for laying roads in Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai, councillors of the Tirunelveli Corporation have sent a memorandum to the Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary, seeking their intervention. Of the 55 councillors, 26 members, including those of All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, have signed it. The memorandum alleged that a particular contractor, with the connivance of the Mayor, A. Jayarani, was preventing other contractors from submitting their tenders. Moreover, he was filing two more tenders with slender variations in the tender amount in a bid to show that the contracts were being legally awarded. "Since the roads being laid in Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai failed to fulfil norms, the Government should examine all roads laid in the recent past." In a bid to prevent such occurrences in future, the Government should immediately cancel the tenders finalised in favour of the "tainted contractor" and the Chief Minister instruct Ms. Jayarani not to show favours to a particular contractor, the memorandum added.
