Thi Gita beats Suvarna

MUMBAI, APRIL 2. Surprises continued to surface in individual events of the Senior National carrom championships at the Andheri Sports complex, top-ranked K. Suvarna, Anupama Kedar feeling the heat against north-east talent in women's singles on Saturday.

Thi Gita of Manipur beat Suvarna 25-14, 25-12, O. Memthai (Manipur) got past Anupama (Bank Sports Board) 25-14, 6-25, 25-6 and Sharmila Borah (Assam) stunned R. Sharmilla (Indian Audit) 25-13, 5-25, 25-10.

Local players suffered mixed fortunes, former India number three Vilas Dalvi and former National champion Sanjay Mande cruising into pre-quarterfinals, defeating Saleem (Karnataka) 25-0, 25-8 and V.S.K. Naidu (Reserve Bank) respectively 25-15, 25-12.

Two-time World champion Maria Irudayam (Indian Airlines) sent out Sanjay Nagaonkar and R.M. Shankara (IA) got past Sayyed Mohsin.
