By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, APRIL 2. The Association of Parents of the Students of Medical Colleges has thanked the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, for the announcement that candidates who had joined the privately run self-financing medical colleges in Pondicherry in 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 under the Government quota would also be entitled for financial assistance by the Government. Mr. Rangasamy had made the announcement in his last week's budget speech on the floor of the Assembly. A spokesman of the Association said in a release here today that according to an earlier Government announcement, only candidates sponsored through Government quota in 2004-2005 would be entitled for the assistance under the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Financial Aid Scheme. The Association had urged Mr. Rangasamy and the Health Minister to also consider students who had joined the courses during the previous two academic years as well . The Association also thanked the Government for raising the annual income ceiling of students' parents for the requirement of the financial assistance scheme from Rs. 1.25 lakhs to Rs. 3 lakhs. Financial assistance would be to the extent of 60 per cent (instead of 50 per cent fixed earlier) of the total tuition fees levied by privately run professional colleges here.
