Pondicherry
KARAIKAL, APRIL 2. Fishermen in 13 hamlets in the Karaikal region of the Union Territory of Pondicherry have started venturing into the sea since Friday in the fibreglass motorboats given to them by the Government and various NGOs. The Pondicherry Chief Minister, N.Rangasamy, flagged off the boats formally at Karaikalmedu hamlet here. Official sources said that the 13 coastal hamlets in Karaikal region were the worst affected in the December 26 tsunami and a large number of fishermen were given the fibreglass boats for sustaining their livelihood. However, fishermen are yet to start their fishing activity in the big mechanised boats for deep-sea fishing.
