CHENNAI, APRIL 2. The media centre at the Nehru stadium here was filled with former Tamil Nadu athletes on Saturday. It was a big gathering as the medal winners and participants in the last National veterans athletic meet at Chennai were honoured. The veterans exchanged pleasantries and they were happy that they were still cared for by the administration. In the last championship five athletes from Tamil Nadu bagged the gold medals and that included the former outstanding athlete B. Balambal of Southern Railway. In the women's under-55 category she collected three gold medals in the Chennai championship. Mrs. Daisy Victory, who has been participating in the National veterans meet continuously from 1983 and in more number of World championships, was in focus as she won three gold medals in the women's under-70 category. Mrs. Sasikala of BSNL, D. Jayaseelan of Kanyakumari District, collected three gold medals apiece in under-55 section. T. John Devasir too bagged three gold medals. All of these veterans made it a rich haul for the State. In 2004 and 2005 Tamil Nadu won the overall championship in the Nationals. W.I. Davaram, President, TN Athletics Association, gave away the mementoes in the absence of P.W.C. Davidar, Member Secretary, SDAT.
