Bus fares to Sabarimala cut

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM April 2. The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) has reduced the bus fare to Sabarimala. The fare from Thiruvananthapuram has been slashed to Rs.100 from Rs.130 and from Kottayam to Pamba to Rs. 80 from Rs. 95. A TDB release issued here today said special services would be operated to Sabarimala in connection with Vishu from April 10 to 17 at 9 p.m. on all days. The service from Thiruvananthapuram will start from Pazhavangadi Ganapathy Temple and Thirunakkara Temple in Kottayam. The return journey from Pamba to Thiruvananthapuram will be at 12.30 p.m. and to Kottayam at 10.30 a.m.

RSP demands action

The State secretary of the RSP, T.J. Chandrachoodan, has demanded that a criminal case be charged against the Education Minister for entrusting a private press with no proper security with the work of printing of SSLC question papers. In a statement issued in Thiruvananthapuram today, he asked the Chief Minister not to allow political considerations to stand in the way of bringing the guilty to book.

KSRTC to distribute pension

The KSRTC will start distributing pension for the current month from April 4. This was stated in an official press note issued in Thiruvananthapuram today.

NoRKA attestation fee

The fee for the attestation of certificates in the three regional centres of the Norka will be accepted in cash in future. The rate is Rs. 50 a certificate. The change is being made as the present system of remitting the fee in the treasury and presenting the challan receipt is causing difficulties to job-seekers.

New Director of Treasuries

R. Rajendran has taken charge as the Director of Treasuries. He comes from the Finance Department where he was working as Joint Secretary. The vacancy was created by the retirement of the incumbent, C.C. Gopi. Mr. Rajendran, who joined the Secretariat in 1974, has worked in various pay commissions, the RCC and the DPI.

Archery contest for tribals

MALAPPURAM APRIL 2. The Minister for Welfare of Backward Classes, A.P. Anil Kumar, today said the Government would strive to bring out the talent of Adivasis for the benefit of the country. He was speaking after inaugurating the Thalakkal Chandu Memorial State-level archery competition for Scheduled Tribes here. Twenty-five teams of Kuruma tribes from Wayanad, Attappadi and Nedumangad are taking part in the two-day competition.

Office-bearers elected

The All Kerala Ex-Servicemen Security Staff Association of BSNL has elected P. Velayudhan as its State president. The other office-bearers of the association are A. Sundaran (vice-president), C. Raveendran (general secretary) and P.V. Gangadharan.

Kanthapuram to be feted

The All-India Sunni Jamiyyathul Ulama general secretary, Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar, will be felicitated at a function to be held at Kundoor near here on April 29. He will be felicitated for his contributions for the improvement of society. Kundoor Abdul Khadir Musliar, senior Islamic scholar, will lead the felicitations.

New chief for Dhanalakshmi Bank

THRISSUR APRIL 2. A.D. Navaneethan has been appointed part-time chairman of the Thrissur-based Dhanalakshmi Bank Limited. Mr. Navaneethan who is the director of the bank has been given the new charge for three years from March 30, according to a statement from the bank on Friday.

Social worker wins award

MALAPPURAM APRIL 2. N.K.A. Latheef, writer and social worker from Mattancherry, Kochi, has won this year's Sahrudaya Award instituted by the Kerala Readers and Writers Circle. He won the award for a series of articles on `Superstitions in Malayalam literature.' The award will be given away at a meeting to be held at Kondungallur this week.

Office-bearers elected

The All Kerala Vocational Higher Secondary Staff Association has elected Paravur Sajeeb as its State president and R.S. Nirmal Kumar as its general secretary. The election took place at the State meeting of the association held at Perinthalmanna.

PSC examination

The Public Service Commission (PSC) will conduct a written examination on April 8 for applicants to the post of physical education teacher at high schools and UP schools in the district. The examination will be held at 11 a.m. An examination for the candidates of grade-2 and laboratory grade-2 posts in veterinary department in the district will be held on April 8 at MSP Higher Secondary School here at 11 a.m. The nature of the questions will be objective, said an official press note here today.

List published

The Government has published a temporary list of the applicants for female health workers' course to be held at J.P.H.N. Training School, Kasaragod. The list will be available for scrutiny at the District Medical Officer's office at Manjeri. Complaints should be sent to the principal before April 10, said an official press release here today.

YMCA branch

inauguration

KOLLAM April 2. Justice Benjamin Koshy of the Kerala High Court will inaugurate the Karicode branch of Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) on April 9. The new branch is located near TKM College of Arts and Science. The regional chairman of the YMCA, M.C. Cyriac, will preside over the inaugural function and the manager of the Fatima Mata National College, A.J. Rozario, will address the gathering.

Photo exhibition

`Kazhchakkapuram', a photo exhibition by press photographers on the devastation caused by tsunami at Alapad, will be held at the Press Club Maidan here from April 3 to 5. The exhibition will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, at 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Easter musical service

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM April 2. The religious programme committee of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) is organising an Easter musical service at the association hall at 6.30 p.m. on Sunday. The choir groups of various churches in the city would participate in the service and render Easter songs. The former Principal of the United Theological Seminary K.K. Koshy would deliver the Easter message.
