CHENNAI, APRIL 2. Over 80 heads of leading city schools had a discussion on why student counselling, transparency in administration and community involvement needed to be issues that would win the best practice award. On Friday, Leslie Conery, deputy CEO of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), got them to think about the categories of potential excellence and the parameters to guide the process. Over 700 school heads from five other cities will participate in symposia and identify the potential categories before the final list of `The Presidential Awards for Transforming Education' is drawn up. According to Annamalai Muthiah, founder of ISTE India, "In June, we will choose six or ten criteria. Participants can choose their category and we will work with them throughout the academic year on how they progress. ." Dr. Conery said that the participants would be divided into State, Central or International Boards, Open Schools and Special schools and within each group there would sub-groups for `developing' or `developed' schools. The awards would be presented at the city, district and national levels. Mr. Muthiah said he would seek corporate sponsorship for each category. S.P. Thyagarajan, University of Madras Vice-Chancellor wanted Information Technology introduced in schools right from the primary level. For more information, contact 98417 29129.
