COIMBATORE, APRIL 2 . The Deputy Commissioner of the Coimbatore Corporation, M. Rahim, will conduct an inquiry into the charges of city's garbage being dumped at a well in disuse in Nallampalayam on city outskirts. A release from the City Health Officer said that the "inquiry report would be submitted to the Commissioner for further action within a week".
Team check
The announcement follows a spot inspection by a team of elected representatives and officials led by the Mayor, T. Malaravan, and the Deputy Mayor, K. Raghupathy. The team members also included the City Health Officer and the Corporation Deputy Commissioner.
Well in disuse
The issue rocked the council meeting recently, when K. Anandakumar, Councillor of Ward 65 alleged that garbage collected in his ward was being dumped at an open well in the neighbouring Vellakinaru panchayat, a km away from his ward. The contractor not only polluted the area and groundwater resources, but also raised false bills for having transported the garbage all the way to Vellalore compost yard, 22 km from the city. The garbage was being transported to a place just one km away every day, whereas a bill was being raised for 22 km. This way, the Corporation was losing nearly Rs. 2,240 per day, which works out to Rs. 56,000 per month.
Several lakhs
When calculated for the entire contract period, it would run into several lakhs, he alleged. Following the complaint, the Mayor ordered for inspecting the well on Saturday. Accepting that the well had a few loads of garbage dumped into it, the Mayor said that since the garbage was lifted from the nearby Ward 65, it would be easy to fix those responsible for it. The probe would fix the officials responsible and the contractors involved, a release from the Corporation asserted.
