Krishna water for Ibrahimpatnam villages soon: Minister

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, APRIL 2. The prevailing drought conditions and severe drinking water problem in various parts of the Ranga Reddy district came into sharp focus at the district general body meeting held here on Saturday.

The Mines and Geology Minister, Sabitha Indra Reddy, announced that Krishna water would reach 89 fluoride-affected villages in Ibrahimpatnam constituency by mid-April.

Though the Krishna drinking water project to the twin cities passed through the Ibrahimpatnam area, its reservoir was empty and villages went without water. She said that tenders for taking Krishna water to these villages would be finalised on April 4 and water released by April 15.

Schemes sanctioned

Similarly, the Minister also announced that the Government had sanctioned Rs. 4.5 crores for Ghatkesar, Rs. 8 crores for Shankarpally mandal and Rs. 5 cores for Tandur for commissioning permanent water supply schemes. Other mandals in the district would also be covered shortly.

To mitigate the drinking water problem in the district, a special grant of Rs. 2.5 crores was made and borewells would be sunk wherever necessary. "Water will be transported to areas where borewells are not feasible," she said. Work had already commenced in 27 villages for supply of water.

The Nagarkurnool MP, M. Jagannadham, and the Malakpet MLA, Malreddy Ranga Reddy, underlined the need for stringent implementation of the WALTA Act for checking commercial exploitation of groundwater that was rampant in the district, particularly in the areas surrounding the State capital.

Citing the example of L.B. Nagar municipality, the latter asked the Government to take over all borewells being operated for commercial purposes immediately.

`Praja Patham'

The Mines Minister appealed to the elected representatives to take part in the `Praja Patham' programme actively, setting aside their political differences to tackle the drought and drinking water problem. "As we can straightaway make spot sanctions, the onus is on public representatives to utilise the opportunity instead of leaving the implementation of works to officials," she maintained.

The Ranga Reddy Zilla Parishad chairman, K. Gnaneshwar, who chaired the meeting, demanded action against the Joint Collector, Ravi Chandra.

He held him responsible for diversion of Rs. 23 lakhs funds by the revenue authorities without the notice of the Zilla Parishad. The funds collected from sand quarries should have been transferred to the Zilla Parishad account. The Zilla Parshad had also passed a resolution on the matter earlier, but the dispute was not resolved.

Similarly, action was also sought against the District Educational Officer by the elected representatives who alleged that she was not taking them into confidence with regards to various programmes taken up in their constituencies.

The Joint Director, Agriculture, Sudarshan Reddy, said seed would be made available for farmers of the district by April 15. The district Collector, L. Premchandra Reddy, Tandur MLA, Narayan Rao, and Ibrahimpatnam MLA were also present.
