THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, APRIL 2 . Poverty alleviation and welfare schemes form the thrust of the annual budget of the Neyyattinkara Municipality for 2005-'06, which was approved by the Municipal Council. There are no new tax proposals in the budget which shows a surplus of Rs.46.8 lakhs. The budget presented by the municipal vice-chairman, R.V. Vijaya Bose, estimates a revenue of Rs. 24.26 crores and expenditure of Rs. 23.8 crores. The highlight of the urban poverty alleviation schemes is a Rs. 2 crores project to provide houses for 500 homeless families. The project will be funded by the Ambedkar Awaz Yojana and the Kerala Development Project. The budget also proposes to renovate dilapidated houses belonging to the weaker sections. An amount of Rs. 50 lakhs has been allocated to provide free food for the aged and the destitute. The budget has set apart Rs. 25 lakhs to supply free medicines to patients in government hospitals and construct a payward-cum-shopping complex at the Taluk Hospital. The budget proposes to construct a solid waste treatment plant for the municipality along with biogas plants at the neighbourhood level. A mobile LPG crematorium will be procured at a cost of Rs. 32 lakhs. A Janasevana Kendram will be set up at the municipal office to enhance the quality of citizen service. An ambulance service is to be started. In his budget speech, Mr. Bose promised to commence work on the Dr. G.R. centenary memorial indoor stadium this year. A Youth Centre with convention facilities will be set up at Aruvippuram with financial support from the HRD Ministry.
