KOCHI, APRIL 2. The rehabilitation of tsunami victims at Edavanakkadu in Vypeen area may be delayed by a few more weeks, as the construction of the houses has not been completed. For the completed houses, power and water connections have not been provided. While laying foundation stone for the houses at Maya Bazar in Edavanakkadu on January 20, the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, had promised the victims that the houses would be handed over to them by March 31. Though the construction of 20 of the 26 houses sponsored by Kuwait-based KGA group has been completed, power and water connections have not yet been provided. Each unit in this project has an area of 401 sq.ft. with one bedroom, hall, toilet, and kitchen. The group has deployed around fifty workers at the site. It is expected to take at least a fortnight to completing construction of the houses. This is also the case with construction of houses sponsored by Mata Amritanandamayi Mutt. The Mutt is constructing nineteen houses at Maya Bazar and has bought 70 cents in a nearby area for constructing eleven more. The dwelling units are 464 sq. ft. area each. Each house will have two bedrooms, dining hall, kitchen, and a toilet. The Mutt will spend Rs. 1.75 lakhs each on a unit. "The Mutt's plan was to construct multi-storey houses for the victims. But, the State Government did not approve the project and wanted us to scale it down to the level of other houses built in the area, in terms of size and quality," said Brahmachari Arun, who is overseeing the construction. It was on March 10 that the land was handed over to the Mutt. In the case of houses constructed by the Mutt, the issue of power and water connections has not yet been finalised. The Mutt said it would complete electrification, plumbing and carpentry work and wait for the Government order.
