`A guardian of cultural ethos'

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI, APRIL 2. The high journalistic standards set by The Hindu and its ability to keep pace with technological advances came in for praise at the celebration of the 125+ years of the national daily, organised by the Citizens' Forum here today.

Presiding over the function, the Tiruchi Mayor and Chairperson of the Committee of Hosts, Sarubala R. Tondaiman, said The Hindu stood apart by virtue of its unambiguous editorials in expressing political blunders, leading to the reversal of many a decision. The newspaper has lived up to the expectations of its founding fathers with its uncompromising stand on various issues of importance.

Accepting honours as the oldest reader of the daily in Tiruchi region, G. Sundaram (86), former Principal, Seshasayee Institute of Technology, expressed pride in belonging to the third generation of readers and advised students to develop their vocabulary by reading the editorials regularly.

The Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University, C. Thangamuthu, emphasised the educative value of all sections of the newspaper. He suggested that the organisation explore the possibility of bringing out a Tamil newspaper with the same ethos.

S. Ranganathan, Secretary, Cauvery Delta Farmers' Welfare Association, recalled the role played by The Hindu in bringing about a rapprochement between farmers of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over the Cauvery dispute at the height of crisis.

The former MP, N. Siva, commended the newspaper for upholding press freedom in the face of authoritarianism. Its writings helped him and many of his colleagues participate in the Parliamentary debates.

The former national vice-president of the Indian Medical Association, M. S. Ashraf, appealed to the newspaper management to accommodate and recognise the excellent works done by medical professionals in mofussil and remote areas.

Litterateur Prema Nandakumar pointed out that the newspaper was the guardian of cultural, literary and musical aspects of the society through its extensive coverage.

The convener of the Committee of Hosts, S. Pushpavanam, said that the readers were also stakeholders of the newspaper thanks to a strong bond between them.
