LONDON, APRIL 3. The death of Pope John Paul II has cast a shadow on Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles' wedding arrangements amid speculation that the marriage could clash with the Pope's funeral. This follows Italian media reports that the possibility of the funeral taking place on Friday, also the day of the scheduled wedding, is not ruled out. If that were to happen, it might create what The Sunday Times described as some "delicate protocol'' problems for the royal family. For one thing, holding a wedding on the same day as the Pope's funeral may be seen to lack taste, especially by Britain's sizeable Catholic community. One religious affairs observer was quoted as saying that a wedding even during the period of the official mourning let alone on the day of the funeral could cause "offence to many of the Queen's Catholic subjects''. But there are also more practical problems. The newspaper pointed out that by convention a senior member of the royal family such as Prince Charles himself or the Duke of Edinburgh would be expected to attend the Pope's funeral on behalf of the Queen. Others expected to be present at the funeral include the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, and the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, causing a "clash of engagements'' as both are also supposed to attend the wedding.
