Thalassery-Mahe bypass work to begin soon

By Our Staff Reporter

KANNUR, APRIL 3. The Minister for Public Works, M.K. Muneer, has said that the work on the first phase of the much-delayed Thalassery-Mahe bypass will begin in six months as the Central Government had agreed in principle to sanction Rs. 20 crores demanded by the State Government for commencing the work.

Laying the foundation stone for the new Dharmadom bridge at a function at Dharmadom today, Dr. Muneer said that as the land acquisition at the stretch of 8 km of the proposed 16 km-long bypass had already been completed, the Government had decided to start the work on the acquired stretch.

The actual work to commence the first phase of the project could be started in six months, he said.

The Minister said that hardly any of the 12 proposed bypass projects got included in the Central Government's annual Plan.

This was the major cause of the delay in commencing the works, he said.

Kollam bypass

The proposed Kollam bypass for which land acquisition had been completed in the 1970s and the Alappuzha bypass, the acquisition of land for which had been completed in the 1980s, were still to be started because of the lack of adequate funds allocated in the annual Plan of the Central Government, he said.

Now that the Central Government had already approved the State's project for upgrading the NH 17 in the State into a four-lane road, completion of the Thalassery-Mahe bypass project assumed urgency, Dr. Muneer said.

Tenders invited

Tenders had been invited for preparing a detailed project report on upgrading the NH into a four-lane road, he said adding that unexpected difficulties faced during acquisition of land was the major hurdle to road development in the State.
