VIENNA, APRIL 4. The Iranian President, Mohammad Khatami, on Monday called on Europe and the United States to support what he says is his country's peaceful nuclear programme. Mr. Khatami, in Vienna to meet Austrian leaders during a one-day visit, repeated what he sees as his country's right to nuclear uranium enrichment technology. ``We ask the Americans as well as the Europeans to support us'' in developing our peaceful programme, he told reporters on Monday. Mr. Khatami also discussed Iraq, which he said has become ``a centre for terrorist activities'' following the U.S.-led invasion. He expressed regret for the ``poor young Americans'' who have died there. Mr. Khatami was expected to discuss trade and other bilateral themes in his meetings with the Austrian President, the Chancellor and other officials. Austria has placed few restrictions on investment and trade with Iran, and many of its companies do good business there. Among them is oil and gas concern OMV, which has exploited the U.S. embargo preventing American oil companies from doing direct business with the Islamic republic.
