PONDICHERRY, APRIL 4. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, told the House during question hour today that steps would be taken to fill vacancies in all civic bodies in the Union Territory. Already, more than 10,600 posts had been filled in various departments. Earlier, the Local Administration Minister, A. Elumalai, told N. Gangadharan (Congress) that 389 posts remained vacant in the local administration department and in municipalities and commune panchayats. The DMK members suggested that the Government involve private players, as is being done in Hyderabad, in the removal of garbage in the outskirts and the outlying regions. But the AIADMK member, A. Anbalagan, opposed the suggestion, saying that the work should be done by the municipal bodies. However, the DMK members said that Mr. Anbalagan's contention was untenable as the present system of lifting garbage through private contractors was well received by the people. Intervening, the Chief Minister said the Government was giving jobs on priority and associating private players in garbage operation had been appreciated by all sections of people.
