PONDICHERRY, APRIL 4. The Pondicherry Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, today said he had asked the Centre to implement wages for the fire service personnel on a par with their counterparts in Delhi. He told the Assembly during Question Time that he had written to the Union Home Minister and also personally taken up the issue with him. Mr. Rangasamy expressed the hope that there would a positive reply soon. He said the jail warders had also demanded a revision in their pay structure. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam member, S. P. Sivakumar, said the Government could depute an official to Delhi to hold talks with the officials concerned to seek the Union Home Ministry's nod for pay parity for fire service personnel. The Leader of the Opposition, R. V. Janakiraman (DMK), also appealed to the Chief Minister to expedite the matter.
Tsunami relief
The Agriculture Minister, A. Namassivayam, told Mr. Janakiraman and A. Anbalagan (AIADMK) that 945 farmers families were affected in the tsunami strike. He said already Rs. 3,750 had been announced as immediate relief to each of these families. In addition, the Chief Minister had also announced in the budget a grant of Rs. 60,000 a hectare of land affected by seawater intrusion. With the members from the Opposition persisting the Government to come out with higher relief packages, the Chief Minister intervened and said the Government spared no measure was in fact appreciated by Karaikal ryots and other tsunami hit sections that it had extended several measures that exceeded their expectation.
