PONDICHERRY, APRIL 4. T. Jayamoorthy (Independent) today made a forceful appeal during zero hour in the Assembly for help to inland fishermen in Ariyankuppam constituency - which he represents - who were also hit by the December 26 tsunami. He said that though the Government had taken immediate steps for the relief and rehabilitation of those affected by the tsunami, the position of inland fishermen was "unenviable." The catamarans of the inland fishermen had been extensively damaged, he said, demanding that the Government should render relief and compensation to these fishermen also. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, told Mr. Jayamoorthy, that his plea would be considered. A. M. Krishnamoorthy (Bharatiya Janata Party) today expressed dismay over the Centre's move to convert the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research here into an autonomous institution. He said that the current session of the Assembly should adopt a unanimous resolution registering its protest and send it to the Centre. Mr. Krishnamoorthy asked Mr. Rangasamy to tell the Centre that it should not go ahead with its plan.
Pope's death condoled
The Assembly paid homage to Pope John Paul II. The Speaker, M. D. R. Ramachandran, made an obituary reference to the Pope and said the pontiff's death was a loss not only to the Catholics but to others as well. The Speaker said that the House expressed its deep sorrow and condolence over the death of the Pope.
