High Court dismisses bail plea of accused

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, APRIL 4. The Karnataka High Court on Monday dismissed an application for bail by two residents of Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh. The petitioners, Palli Bhaskar Reddy and S.R. Erriswamy Reddy, were charged by Karnataka with having "links" with naxalites and with allegedly being involved in the kidnapping of some mine employees at Sandur in Bellary district. According to the State, the accused and five others had on February 24, 2002 kidnapped Shudhodana, manager of TMS Mines at Sandur, Nazir Ahmed, driver, Rajendra J., Executive Director of the mines, and another person. They demanded a ransom of Rs. 1 crore for their release.

The kidnapped persons were released the next day. Bhaskar Reddy and Erriswamy Reddy were arrested on April 24. A Bellary court had rejected their plea for bail and then they moved the High Court. The State opposed the bail, saying the petitioners had "links" with the naxalites. Justice Mohan Shantanagouder dismissed their plea for bail.
