IUML district meet evokes keen interest

By Abdul Latheef Naha

MALAPPURAM, APRIL 4. The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is all set to hold its three-day seventh district conference here from Friday. The party had conducted its last district meet here in 1999.

The Muslim League State general secretary, P.K. Kunhalikutty, said here today that the district conference would be as significant as a State conference. The meeting will have added significance in the present political scenario, he said.

Fitting response

The League leadership in the district has tacitly agreed that the district conference would be a fitting response to the CPI(M) State conference held in Malappuram in February. Some of the leaders had even gone on record saying that the party needed a district-level meet to match the State conference of the CPI(M).

The first district conference of the party had taken place in 1971, followed by 1975 and 1978. After the first three conferences in Malappuram, the party held its district meet in Manjeri in 1992. The last meeting was held in Kuttippuram in 1999.

The IUML district secretary, K.P.A. Majeed, said that the frequency and periodicity of the district meeting would be decided by the State committee of the party based on the needs of the times.

Addressing newspersons, Mr. Kunhalikutty said that, `a 25,000 green guard march planned on Sunday afternoon itself would be a mammoth one.'

Top leaders coming

All top leaders of the party, including national leaders, will be in Malappuram during the weekend. The State committee of the party will meet in Manjeri on Saturday and Sunday. Mr. Kunhalikutty said that the committee would discuss various issues affecting the UDF, the implementation of Narendran Commission Report and the recent political developments in the State.

According to sources, the setback the party suffered in the last general elections and the inroads made by the CPI(M) into the party's bastion in Malappuram will come up for discussion. The State committee will also chalk out programmes to effectively counter the CPI(M) onslaught in the district.

The three-day conference will have sessions for youth, students, women, farmers, Gulf expatriates, teachers and service personnel, workers and Dalits.
