COIMBATORE, APRIL 4. Students who take up careers in information technology should be ready to learn continuously in order to keep up-to-date with advances around the globe. "Be ready to change. Colleges close in the evening and the last bus leaves at 4.30 p.m., but information technology companies work round-the-clock. Cultural shock regarding working hours and work environment could affect some students," said the Vice Chancellor, Anna University, E. Balagurusamy. He was speaking at a function organised at the Government College of Technology, as part of the Tamil Nadu State-level Placement Programme conducted by Anna University for Coimbatore Zone, to distribute appointment orders to candidates who had been recruited by four top software companies. "Getting a job is one thing but holding on to it is another. No one can give you a job guarantee. Taking pride in doing your work is important. Be loyal to the organisation, put in hard work and uphold honesty and integrity," Prof. Balagurusamy noted. "What you have learnt is only 50 per cent of what you need to know, so continue to learn - and more importantly - be sure to `learn to learn' because it is a continuous process," he said. Ethical behaviour was essential in all software companies, besides the need to see how one's individual work fitted in with the rest of the work done by the organisation. Among those who participated was the Director, Centre for University - Industry Collaboration, Anna University, Prof. Mannar Jawahar; placement team members, Prof. S. Selvam and Prof. T. Kalaiselvan; and the Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and the Placement and Training Officer, GCT, Prof. A. Ebenezer Jeyakumar.
