Winning start by Martinez, Pierce

AMELIA ISLAND (FLORIDA), APRIL 5. Previous winners Conchita Martinez of Spain and Mary Pierce of France led the way on Monday in the first round of the Bausch and Lomb Championships

Martinez and Pierce both advanced with straight set wins.

Martinez beat American Marissa Irvin, 7-6 (4), 6-4, while the 14th-seeded Pierce needed just 46 minutes to win 6-3, 6-0 over Daja Bedanova of the Czech Republic.

Kuerten advances

Gustavo Kuerten advanced to the second round of the Open Comunidad Valenciana in straight sets on Monday as he made his return to the ATP tour following a hip operation.

The Brazilian needed only an hour and five minutes to beat fourth-seeded Olivier Rochus of Belgium 6-2, 6-4 in the first round of the euro340,250 ($ 436,511) clay court tournament.

Kuerten had been out of action since undergoing surgery last September.
