Greg Chappell tipped to succeed Wright

MUMBAI, APRIL 5. Former Australia captain Greg Chappell is strongly tipped to succeed John Wright as the Indian team's coach. It is understood that the India captain Sourav Ganugly is in favour of Chappell, who launched his `Cricket Down Under The Chappell Way' programme at the MIG Club, Bandra here on Monday. With the five match one-day series against put off, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in the words of an official, "May take a week or 15 day's time'' to name the new coach.

Four years ago, Chappell, missed the bus, with the senior Indian players like Ganguly and Rahul Dravid opting for the New Zealander, Wright following his successful stint with Kent County.

Wright finishing a successful tenure with the India team after the six match series against Pakistan, it seems Chappell's turn has come. Sources revealed that a top former Indian captain has been asked to ascertain the availability of one or two candidates, one among them being Chappell.

Eventually all will depend on the "terms and conditions'' offered to Chappell and his willingness to work with the Indian team till the 2007 World Cup. — Our Special Correspondent
