Traders block traffic against ban on lorries

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE, APRIL 5. In a sudden development this morning, traders at Santhepet shut their business establishments and formed a human chain at K.R. Circle, throwing the morning traffic out of gear for over half an hour, to protest against the ban on the entry of heavy vehicles into Santhepet area during the day.

More than 700 businessmen closed their shops after they were told that lorries would not be allowed into Santhepet between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. Police erected barricades on Rama Vilas Road, which leads to Santhepet, and prevented lorries from entering the area. The decision, police sources said, was taken to streamline the traffic since the entry of lorries during peak hours caused chaos in the area.

Meanwhile, the human chain by the traders threw traffic out of gear as they blocked all the four major roads leading to the circle. The rush hour traffic was stranded for over half an hour as the vehicles from all directions piled up around K.R. Circle.

While traffic on Sayyaji Rao Road, Devaraja Urs Road and Albert Victor Road was affected, the traffic police had a tough time managing and diverting the traffic.

Even as the unrelenting traders refused to break the chain, the Deputy Commissioners of Police, T.R. Suresh and Balakirshna, rushed to the spot with a large number of personnel to defuse the tension.
