Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, APRIL 5. Members called upon the Government during question time in the Assembly today to keep a close vigil on implementation of the schemes sponsored by the Pondicherry Adi Dravidar Development Corporation. Replying to R. Siva (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam), the Welfare Minister, M. Chandirakasu, said the Corporation had disbursed Rs. 55.54 lakhs during 2004-2005 under various schemes and a total of 133 persons had benefited from them. Mr. Siva recalled how in the previous session there was a spate of criticism that ineligible persons were being selected. He said members had also sought action on the discrepancies in the implementation of the schemes. He said mere transfer of officials or functionaries would not be sufficient. The Speaker, M. D. R. Ramachandran, wanted the Government to make the report of enquiry if any into the alleged irregularities in the working of the corporation available for perusal by Members. V. M. C. Sivakumar (DMK) said the MLAs should be associated with the processing of the applications for loans or assistance to the applicants. Neela Gangadharan (Congress) wanted the Government to hand over works now being implemented by the Corporation to government departments. At one stage the Speaker pointed out that in his constituency most of the beneficiaries were from Tamil Nadu villages. Mr. Chandirakasu told the members that he would go into their representations and ensure that the benefits of the schemes reached the deserving persons.
