Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, APRIL 5. Malladi Krishna Rao (Independent) from the Yanam Assembly segment, an enclave of the Union Territory of Pondicherry in Andhra Pradesh, today called upon the Government in the Assembly to work out an agreement with the Andhra Pradesh Government to augment the water supply from the present 19 cusecs to 30 cusecs to Yanam. This could be done by linking the French channel with Adivipolam channels, he said. In an inconclusive debate on demands for grants to some departments including PWD in the Assembly today, the member said the Pondicherry administration could deposit Rs. 2 crores with the Andhra Pradesh Government for the water supply scheme to Yanam. He placed on the table of the House details on requirements of infrastructure such as roads and bridges in Yanam. A. Anbalagan (All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) stressed the need for confirmation of the watch and ward personnel attached to the Assembly secretariat. He also stressed that whenever the House was dealing with demands for grants departments the Secretaries of the departments concerned should be present in the chambers in the House so that details on steps taken by the Government could be available to members through the Ministers. R.V. Janakiraman (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) wanted speedy implementation of PWD schemes. He also wanted erection of plants for desalination of seawater to tackle drinking water problem. Nara Kalainathan (Communist Party of India), a nominated member, wanted long perspective plan to tackle drinking water problem. Mary Teresa (Congress), another nominated member, said the crop loan given to farmers should be raised to Rs. 10,000 from Rs. 5,500 now available.
Desalination plant
The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, announced in the Assembly during question time that a Rs. 1.5 crore desalination plant would be commissioned soon in Karaikal to ensure that potable water was available to the residents there. The Chief Minister's announcement came with M.O.H.F. Shah Jahan (Congress) and T. Jayamoorthy (Independent) persuading the government to come out with specific schemes to provide drinking water. Mr. Jayamoorthy said that the intrusion of sea water, particularly in the wake of the tsunami on December 26, had upset the sub soil water table, and complaints were being received that only saline water was available through borewells in the tsunami hit areas. Consequently, drinking water was in short supply, he said. The Agriculture Minister, A. Namassivayam, explained the steps taken by the government to tackle the problem of the sub standard drinking water in residential areas. R. Nalamaharajan (Congress) drew the attention of the Chief Minister to the problems faced by people in Karaikal in getting potable water. The Chief Minister announced that a desalination plant would be installed in Karaikal soon.
