Immunisation in two phases

By Our Staff Reporter

VELLORE, APRIL 5. About 4.1 lakh children in the age group of 0-5 in the district will be covered under the pulse polio immunisation camp to be conducted in two phases on April 10 and May 15 this year.

Speaking to newspersons here on Monday, the Collector, S. Gopalakrishnan, said that 9,524 persons -- employees of the Departments of Health and Nutritious Meal Scheme besides voluntary organisations -- would be involved in the task of immunisation of children in 2,096 centres, comprising 1,868 in rural areas and 228 in urban areas.

A total of 349 supervisors would monitor the implementation of the programme. Nearly 170 vehicles will be utilised for the task.

The Collector said that though Vellore district had been free of any fresh polio case since October/November 2004 when the previous immunisation camp was held, the coming immunisation camp assumed significance in terms of total prevention of any fresh outbreak or even a single case in the light of the surge of polio cases witnessed in some northern States including Bihar and Uttar Pradesh during the last six months.

There could be no room for any laxity in the implementation of the programme just because no case was detected in the district in the last six months.

Even those who got their children immunised just a day earlier to the camp had been advised to get them immunised again on the day of the pulse polio camp to ensure the total success of the programme.

The authorities would focus special attention on the children in the Narikkurava families and other nomadic tribes, those frequenting the towns and villages on the State borders and inhabitants of hill villages, the Collector said.

Campsites

A. Somasundaram, Deputy Director of Health Services, Vellore, said immunisation would be carried out in nutritious meal centres, primary health centres, health sub-centres, government hospitals, the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital, railway stations, bus stands and places where people congregate for festivals and shandies.

Special arrangements have also been made to carry out immunisation in remote areas not having transport facilities.

A total of 4,00,101 children were immunised during the pulse polio immunisation programme held in October 2004 and 4,09,000 children in November 2004. Five lakh doses have been made available for the coming camp, he said.
