Aircel `Genie point' stirs cellular market

By V. S. Palaniappan

COIMBATORE, APRIL 5. Aircel, the cellular service provider in the Tamil Nadu and Chennai circles with over 17 lakh subscribers, has "stirred the cellular phone market in these circles" by its new retail initiative, Genie Point.

According to Aircel, the Genie Point is a flagship retail outlet for selling specialised post-paid products and acts as an activation centre for prepaid cards. This novel initiative has been a runaway success setting new benchmarks in the cellular industry. Now, Aircel has over 500 such outlets across the State.

To mark the launch of this retailing arm, Aircel earlier introduced a postpaid tariff plan with free talk time and short messaging service (SMS). This has been well received in the market, attracting over 50,000 subscribers. Even as the mobile market started moving more towards prepaid market, Aircel has been able to garner thousands of post paid subscribers.

The International Data Corporation (IDC) has rated Aircel as the No. 1 operator in India among mobile users in overall satisfaction. In the rating, Aircel has scored 97 points on a 100-point user satisfaction scale, clearly crossing the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) benchmark of 95 per cent. "Genie Point will redefine the rules of the cellular market in Tamil Nadu", said K. V. P. Baskar, Director and CEO Aircel. Aircel Cellular today boasts of the largest subscriber base with Chennai circle accounting for over 5 lakh subscribers and the Tamil Nadu circle accounts for over 12 lakh subscribers.
