NEW DELHI, APRIL 5. The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, today released a set of commemorative postage stamps on Dandi March with a reminder to all Indians that this milestone in history represented not just a desire among the freedom fighters to "free us from foreign rule," but also to liberate future generations from a "mindset of dependence." Releasing the stamps at a function here attended by the chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance, Sonia Gandhi, the Prime Minister recalled how "holding up a fist of salt from the soil of Mother India, Gandhiji made British Rule unpalatable. It was a historic moment in the creation of free India." Of the view that Dandi March ought to be remembered in its true spirit, Dr. Singh said: "It was a march of unity, of all Indians, irrespective of caste and religion, language and region. Gandhiji's broad-minded approach remains today at the root of our concept of an inclusive society." Also, the Prime Minister made out a case for re-discovering the truth that the Father of the Nation pursued. In her address, Ms. Gandhi said the re-enactment of Dandi March provided Indians with another opportunity to follow the path of Mahatma Gandhi, the causes he championed and the ideals he espoused. Hailing Dandi March as a watershed chapter of the freedom struggle, the Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Dayanidhi Maran, said the Department of Posts had issued stamps on Mahatma Gandhi on 22 occasions till date.
