HYDERABAD, APRIL 5. Speakers at a meeting of the Girijan United Forum (GUF) decided to request the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, to head the Tribal Advisory Board to ensure that Girijans got their due and were helped to come above the poverty line. Another decision taken was to moot the idea of forming a State-level monitoring committee to keep an eye on the activities of non-government organisations that received "crores of rupees" from external funding sources in the name of development. The chairperson, Girijan Cooperative Corporation, T. Ratna Bai, and the chairman, Andhra Pradesh State Scheduled Tribes Cooperative Finance Development Corporation (TRICOR), Devara Subba Rao, said Tuesday's meeting was aimed at formulating an action plan. However, they said that over the years there had only been talk and virtually no action. "Girijan welfare continues to be neglected," they said. Mrs. Ratna Bai said that a drive would be launched soon to identify youth in the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) areas, provide them training and offer them gainful employment. Likewise, conventions of women (Mahila Saddassu) would be held with the objective of forming thrift groups.
