Congress activist gunned down

NALGONDA: Maoists shot dead a Congress activist at Tirumalagiri of Pedda Adisarlapally mandal last night.

According to the Officer on Special Duty, Ravinder, two naxalites approached Yellaiah (64) and asked him to show the way to a nearby village. Accordingly, he came out of his house and accompanied the naxalites. On the way, one of the naxalites fired at Yellaiah killing him on the spot.

The OSD characterised the killing as a mindless act. Tirumalagiri is the native place of Boda Sailu alias Kurmaiah, secretary of the Krishnapatti dalam. Yellaiah is survived by wife, four sons and two daughters.

CPI(M) plea on RTC buses

HYDERABAD: The CPI(M) State Committee on Tuesday urged the Government to lift ban on purchase of new buses and also on appointments in the APSRTC.

B.V. Raghavulu, party secretary, in a letter to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, suggested that increased plying of buses by the RTC would not only strengthen the public transport system but also help the corporation financially.

Tea traders' plea adjourned

HYDERABAD: The writ petition filed by traders of tea business challenging the imposition of 12 per cent tax has been adjourned to Monday.

The division bench, comprising Justice G. Bikshapathi and Justice P.S. Narayana was dealing with a writ petition filed by Federation of All India Tea Traders Association and Andhra Pradesh Tea Merchants. The petitioners complained that 12 per cent tax was extraordinary and this being done in the name of new VAT (Value Added Tax).

Railway worker dies in mishap

VIJAYAWADA: A railway worker was killed when a train hit him on the track near the signalling department office in the early hours of Monday.

According to the railway police, A. Sivaji (45), a helper in bulb cabin of the signalling department, was on night duty on Sunday. His duty was to check the track. When he was returning to the office, the Sathavahana Express, which was on its way to Secunderabad from Vijayawada, hit him. He died on the spot.

Award for scientist

NELLORE: Noted renewable energy scientist and convenor of Nayudamma Centre for Development Alternatives, A. Jagadeesh, has been chosen for the eco award in the category of alternative energy sources by Earth Community Organisation, Canada. This is an international award given annually for achievements in different categories.

Dr. Jagadeesh has published more than 100 research papers in international journals. At present, he is Head, Centre for Energy and Sustainable Resources, R.M.K. Engineering College, Kavaraipettai, Tamil Nadu.

Red sanders smuggling: 3 held

CUDDAPAH: Forest officials of Kodur range arrested three persons on Tuesday on the charge of smuggling red sanders.

The arrested were Chennur Narayana of Y. Kota village in Obulavaripalle mandal, Udayagiri Balasubbaiah of Balijapalle Harikanawada and Aratikayala Sriramulu Achari of Rajampet, according to the Kodur Forest Range officer, Khader Vali.

Removed from Congress post

HYDERABAD: The APCC on Tuesday announced removal of Vijayalakshmi as convener of its SC cell following a press report that she was a member of a gang which was involved in sale of land aided by fake documents.

N.M. Ramulu, announcing the removal, said the party circles were surprised by her involvement in the activity. He warned that anyone using party post as a means to resort to any undesirable act would not only be removed but lose party membership with the APCC president's permission.

Annamayya `vardhanti'

TIRUMALA: The saint poet Tallapaka Annamacharya's 502nd `vardhanti' was observed on Tuesday.

The processional deities of Lord Malayappa Swamy, flanked with his two consorts, were brought out to the venue, Narayana giri gardens, in procession.

The pontiff of the renowned Ahobilapeetam Srivan Satagopa Narayana Yateendra Desikan and the pontiff of Visakha Sarada Peetam Sri Swaroopanandendra Swamy, who graced the occasion, lauded the devotion of the saint.

The TTD Annamacharya project organised Dwadasi Sapthagiri Sankeerthana music concert on the occasion.

Honour for karate kid

KARIMNAGAR: A Juko-kai karate kid, G. Sarasija of Karimnagar town has been awarded with the prestigious Samakya Bharath Gaurav sathkar-2005 constituted by the Madras Telugu Academy on April 3 in Chennai.

She also displayed her karata talent at the awards function and captivated the audience, including the film actor, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, according to a press note.

Woman axed to death

KARIMNAGAR: A woman was allegedly axed to death branding her sorcerer at Raghavapur village on the outskirts of Peddapalli mandal on Tuesday.

The police said the woman, M. Narsamma (70), a labourer, was sleeping in her hut when M. Shekhar (35) along with two others reportedly axed her to death. The main accused, Shekhar, was suspecting the woman a sorcerer and responsible for the death of his two wives.

Two farmers end lives

NELLORE: A farmer of Brahmanapalli village in Marripadu mandal, Ramalinga Reddy, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison on Tuesday. He originally belonged to Manubolu mandal and had been eking out livelihood by raising waterlemon crop.

In another case at Kakulavaripalle village of Anantasagaram mandal, a farmer R. Ramana Reddy (42), committed suicide by consuming pesticide.

Low pressure over Bay

VISAKHAPATNAM: Under the influence of trough of low pressure area over south-west Bay of Bengal and its neighbourhood, rain or thundershowers is likely at one or two places over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema during the next 36 hours, according to a special weather bulletin issued by the Cyclone Warning Centre here. Heavy rain is also likely at one or two places during the same period.

Plea for DA ChittooR: The executive committee meeting of the Retired Employees Association at its meeting held here on Tuesday urged the Government to release the second instalment of D.A. arrears to pensioners along with service Government employees this month as promised. The committee also thanked the Government for sanctioning interim relief for pensioners.

Felicitated

CHITTOOR: Several associations in the town felicitated the former MLA, C.K. Jayachandra Reddy alias C.K. Babu on his assumption as honorary president of the Chittoor Municipal Employees Association. The Municipal Commissioner, Rajendra Prasad, was also felicitated for solving the long-pending problems of municipal employees.

Painting contest

TIRUPATI: Sri Venkateswara Institute of Traditional Sculpture and Architecture (SVITSA), an institute run by the TTD to promote art, is conducting a painting competition for IX, X and Intermediate students on April 17. According to the principal of the institute, G.L.Bhanuprasad Rao, the entry is free and the painting kits would also be provided by them.

Music album

TIRUPATI: "Innovators", a Tirupati-based music team, is coming out with a private music album titled "Heart beats", comprising six differently treated songs aimed at the youth. The pooja was performed for the recording of the songs on Monday.

Bank organises poor-feeding

KARIMNAGAR: State Bank of Hyderabad organised a poor-feeding programme at the old-age and disabled home at Kharkanagadda in the town on the occasion of its bank day on Tuesday. The Collector, C. Parthasarathi, the bank AGM, Kanaka Sundaram, the lead district manager, Ramchandra Reddy, and others attended.

FAN nominee for UN meetings

WARANGAL: The secretary of Modern Architects for Rural India (MARI), R. Murali, will represent Fresh Water Action Network (FAN), an international network of NGOs, at meetings to be held at the United Nations from April 7 to 18.

He will take part in the 13th meeting of Commission for Sustainable Development being organised by the UN and the advisory board meeting of FAN. He is one among seven persons nominated by FAN from Asia.

Recruitment rally

Sangareddy: Indian Air Force's recruitment rally for Group 10 trades will be held from April 14 to 16 at Bowenpally in Secunderabad. According to a press release issued here on Tuesday.

The Collector, Anil Kumar Singhal, asked young men from the Medak district, who had completed ITI training, to utilize this opportunity.

Warrant Officer, Deerendranath from the Selection Centre would be available at Sangareddy on Wednesday and Thursday to answer any queries from candidates, the note added.

Man run over

KURNOOL: A person, identified as Venkateswarlu, was run over by an unidentified vehicle near Polakal in Kurnool district on Tuesday. According to reports, he was waiting for transportation of palm trees when the mishap occurred.

Demonstration

KURNOOL: Junior college lecturers of aided colleges demonstrated at spot valuation centre at Government Junior college here on Tuesday.

They threatened to strike work of evaluation if there was no response from the government over their demands regarding wage revision and pension.
