India to bank on friendship with China

TAWANG (ARUNACHAL PRADESH), APRIL 5. India today said it would like to "depend on the friendship and understanding" with China to resolve the boundary issue with that country.

Asked about the Chinese Ambassador, Sun Yuxi's remark last week that Arunachal Pradesh was a disputed area between India and China, the Home Minister, Shivraj Patil, said that after the meeting "we would first like to depend on the friendship and understanding [to solve such issues]."

Mr. Patil, who visited this strategically important town located less than 100 km from the border with China, also said security measures in the area were adequate.

"Our forces are strong enough and enough everywhere to take care of all these things."

Top military officials briefed Mr. Patil and the Special Secretary (Internal Security), Anil Chaudhury, for almost an hour on the security situation. — PTI
