KOLKATA, APRIL 5. Tamil Nadu XI put up an outstanding display in the first half to humble Bengal juniors by 3-0 in a pre-quarterfinals match of the Indian Oil all-India 110th Beighton Cup hockey tournament at the CC&FC ground here on Monday. Karnataka XI too made it to the quarterfinal league stage with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Delhi's ONGC. Tamil Nadu XI took the lead through an early goal by S. Heartlin James's in the fifth minute. Despite the heat and humidity taking its toll, the Bengal boys fought hard but to no avail. The visiting team held the upper hand in the first half to score two more goals through Radhakrishnan Ganesan (12th minute) and Philip Martin Ponnuraj's penalty corner conversion (27th minute). Karnataka playing a senior side failed to control the match as it would have liked. It had an early goal through Roland Kiran via a penalty corner and he scored again in the 24th minute to consolidate the lead. ONGC fought back in the second half when Karnataka players seemed to have ran out of steam. Amarjeet Pratap scored a fine field goal in the 67th minute but that was the only success for the Delhi side. Karnataka, thereafter, saw to it that things did not go out of hand.
