KILA plans training programmes on MDGs

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, APRIL 5. The Kerala Institute for Local Administration (KILA) is planning to organise a series of training programmes for civic representatives in achieving Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the suggestions that came up at the World Mayors' Conference, which concluded here on Monday.

It also has plans to organise detailed studies for preparing project reports for civic bodies based on the recommendations of the conference, said P.P. Balan, director of KILA, here today.

The awareness about MDGs would certainly help civic bodies to formulate programmes and include them in their budget proposals.

During the discussions, it was found that a large number of civic representatives were unaware of the MDGs, Mr. Balan said.

According to him, the MDGs, if implemented, would bring in tremendous changes in Kerala society and civic administrators should be trained for the purpose.

KILA would be preparing specific projects for achieving MDGs through all the municipal Corporations, he said.

Though the host city may not be directly and immediately benefiting from the programme, the conference gave the delegates clear insight into poverty eradication, sewage treatment and environmental aspects, he said.

At the same time, A.N. Shetty, senior consultant and advisor to the All India Institute for Local Self-Government, Mumbai, said the Cochin Declaration would be submitted to the Union Ministry for Urban Development for follow-up action. He felt that Kochi and Kerala would be benefiting directly from the programme as a tourist destination.

More than that, the meeting provided a platform for exchange of good governance practice in various civic bodies.

This would help the civic bodies to learn from the experience of their counterparts in different parts of the State and even foreign countries.

Such an exercise was of great significance to civic bodies in the country as most of them had different style of functioning and organisational structure, he said.

One of the sessions was on AIDS and it was decided to focus attention on youth as it was revealed that 70 per cent of the affected persons in India were youth, Mr. Shetty said.
