Minister's remark on sarpanches draws flak

By Our Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA, APRIL 5. The Andhra Pradesh Panchayat Raj Chamber has condemned the remarks reportedly made by the Minister for Panchayat Raj, J.C.Diwakar Reddy, against sarpanches demanding more powers.

The Panchayat Raj Chamber president, Yalamanchili Babu Rajendra Prasad, said it was improper for the Minister to say that there would be anarchy in the local bodies, if all powers were given to sarpanches, MPPs, ZPTC and MTPC members. He demanded that the Minister withdraw the statement immediately. Mr. Prasad said the Panchayat Raj Chamber was not demanding just powers, but wanted funds, responsibilities and duties entrusted to the local bodies listed in the Eleventh Schedule of Article 243 G of the 73rd Constitutional Amendment. Such comments from the Minister for Panchayat Raj, `the head of the family', would hurt leaders of the local self-governments, he said. He said 21,943 sarpanches 14, 645 MPTC members, 1,104 ZPTC members and 1,104 MPPs would agitate if the State Government did not divulge powers to them.
