Raichur
By Our Staff Correspondent
RAICHUR, APRIL 5. The Raichur MLA, A. Papa Reddy, has urged the State Government to initiate steps to prevent Andhra Pradesh from utilising surplus Krishna waters for the irrigation projects it has taken up without clearance from the Central Water Commission.
Extend facilities
He also wants the Government to extend the Narayanapur Right Bank Canal (NRBC) of the Upper Krishna Project and extend irrigation facilities in Raichur taluk. Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, he said that the Government's negligence in using its share of Krishna waters had encouraged Andhra Pradesh to take up 21 irrigation projects without clearance. He said that there are reports that the Andhra Pradesh Government has taken up around 21 irrigation projects worth Rs. 4,500 crores using Krishna waters. It had already finalised tenders for 21 irrigation projects proposed in the Krishna basin. But the State Government has failed to initiate action to stop such projects, he said. Mr. Reddy said that a few years ago, the then State Government had opposed the release of additional water from the Cauvery to Tamil Nadu. The then Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, had undertaken a "padayatra" to mobilise farmers in the Cauvery basin to support the Government's stand. But the same Government has neglected the Krishna Basin.
Charged
He alleged that the Government has neglected work on the canal. The work on the project had been completed till the 95-km stretch. The canal needs to be extended till the 157th-km stretch to provide irrigation to the drought-prone areas of Raichur taluk. But, work was stopped after the Government decided to complete the project after the reallocation of surplus Krishna waters under Scheme B of the Bachawat Tribunal Award.
Pending work
He demanded that the Government take up pending work immediately and complete the project as soon as possible. He said that around Rs. 100 crores was required to complete the pending work on the canal. He threatened that his party would be forced to resort to agitations if the issue is neglected any further.
Lift irrigation schemes
Regarding the pending lift irrigation schemes in Raichur taluk, he said that the survey work on the Bolmandoddi Lift Irrigation Scheme has been completed. An estimate for Rs. 300 crores has been prepared to implement the scheme with a provision to utilise around 4 tmcft of Krishna waters. Survey on the Gurjapur lift irrigation scheme with the Narayanapur canal as the source has also been completed. He demanded that the Government start work on these lift irrigation schemes without delay. Ashok Ghasti, General Secretary of the district unit of the BJP, was present.
