CHENNAI, APRIL 5. The Minister for Forests and Environment, R. Vaithilingam, today announced in the Assembly that a Rs.10 crore proposal for the repair and reconstruction of the coastal shelterbelt and mangroves had been submitted to the World Bank for funding. The coastal shelterbelt plantations and mangroves along the coastline of the State had protected the lives and property from the recent tsunami attack. "There is also scope to cover the remaining line with this bio-shield in a phased manner," the Minister said. The Government would sanction Rs.1 crore for raising jatropha demonstration plots in 115 joint forest management committee villages covering 460 hectares in the State for a period of three years till 2006-2007. To provide electricity and motive power to remote villages and hamlets, which were not covered through the grid extension, a five-year project titled, `Village energy security through bio-mass' would be implemented at a cost of Rs. 98.96 lakhs. A proposal had been submitted to the Centre through the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency. Proposals had been formulated for the Rs.1.05 crore Eastern Ghats Development Programme to undertake modern forest produce plantations, tribal life supporting activities, free supply of seedlings, eco-awareness programmes and fire protection work during 2005-2006, the Minister said.
Concessions for unorganised sector
The State Government today announced a slew of concessions for the benefit of workers belonging to the unorganised sector. Replying to the debate on the demand for grants to his Department, the Labour Minister, P. Annavi, said the maternity assistance for registered women construction workers and workers registered with the Tamil Nadu Manual Workers Social Security and Welfare Board would be revised from Rs. 2000 to Rs. 4000 per worker. The Government would incur an additional expenditure of Rs.55 lakhs on account of this decision. The Government had decided to enhance the cash assistance for reimbursement of cost of spectacles from Rs. 250 to Rs. 500 for every construction worker. The number of beneficiaries would be increased from 1000 to 2000. Funds to the tune of Rs.7.5 lakhs would be earmarked for this purpose. In the event of the death of a registered construction or manual worker, assistance to the nominee of the deceased would be revised as Rs.15, 000 from Rs.10,000. The Government would set up crèches in Chennai, Tiruchi, Madurai, Tiruneveli, Salem and Coimbatore at a total cost of Rs.18.32 lakhs for the benefit of the children of working mothers.
