Stage set for rural sports meet

TIRUPATI, APRIL 5. The Sri Venkateswara Arts College playground is being spruced up for the State-level `Palleseemala Sampradaya Kreeda Sambaralu' (rural sports meet) to be conducted by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) here from April 6 to 9. 1,500 participants from all the 23 districts are expected to converge on the temple town for the mega event.

The event is an attempt to introduce the games of the countryside to the urban youth. Sporting events like karrasamu, karrabilla, bongaram, betchalata, putta chendu for boys and thokkudu billa, mukkugille ata, oppulakuppa, thake ata and kunde ata for girls are planned. Besides, as a demonstration, `puliveshalu' for boys and `kolatalu' for girls will be conducted.

The participants will arrive at the venue in a colourful procession from the Gandhi statue. Film actor, Rajendra Prasad, will take part in the ground breaking ceremony, while the event will be inaugurated by TTD EO, A.P.V.N. Sarma. A huge digital screen has been installed at the venue and galleries have been arranged for 3,000 persons.

Felicitation

The elderly sportspersons, who have brought fame to the State, will be felicitated on the occasion. The sports committee has selected Kamineni Eswar Rao (80), a weight lifter who represented the country in 1956 (Melbourne) and 1960 (Rome) Olympics; Pichaiah (75), an Arjuna awardee, ball badminton player; E. Subba Rao (75), a sports journalist; Syam Sundar (63), a Dronacharya awardee, who acted as the Indian volleyball team's coach; Ramana Rao (62), also a Dronacharya awardee, who represented the South-East Asian countries in the International Volleyball Federation; N. Mukesh Kumar, a triple Olympian and member of the Indian junior hockey selection committee and Karnam Malleswari, who won the lone bronze medal for India in the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

Depending on the success of the maiden attempt, the event would be conducted every year, he said. P.R. Mohan, former SAAP chairman is the tournament director.
