More towns under heritage umbrella

By Our Special Correspondent

JAIPUR, APRIL 5. The Rajasthan Government has identified 28 towns across the State for launching heritage conservation works at an estimated cost of Rs. 10 crores during 2005-06. These works will include maintenance of historic buildings, cleanliness drive at the places of archaeological significance and lighting of heritage structures.

The State Government had identified 23 towns for the works during the previous year and had now added five more towns to the list, said the Minister of State for Urban Development and Local Self Government, Pratap Singh Singhvi, here today. The towns included in the scheme this year are Churu, Ratan Nagar, Pilibanga, Kaman and Khetri.

Mr. Singhvi said detailed proposals for the works to be undertaken during the next one year were being prepared, while committees headed by District Collectors had been appointed to supervise the works.

The Minister pointed out that besides the Local Self Government Department - which will function as the nodal agency for implementation of these works - the cooperation of Archaeology and Art and Culture Departments, INTACH and the local non-Government organisations would be sought for implementation of a variety of works.

Other towns in the State already covered in the scheme include Bikaner, Chomu, Udaipur, Sikar, Pushkar, Jhalawar, Kota, Jaisalmer, Dungarpur, Bundi, Alwar, Mandawa, Jhunjhunu and Deeg.

Mr. Sighvi said all urban bodies had also been instructed to send the proposed action plans to the State Government for conservation of heritage in their respective areas during the next three years by April 20.
