Jharkhand Minister refuses to assume office

By A Correspondent

RANCHI, APRIL 5. The Welfare Minister of Jharkand, Ramesh Singh Munda, has refused to assume office in protest against the non-inclusion of his party colleague, Jaleshwar Mahato, in the State Cabinet.

The Minister told The Hindu that his party, Janata Dal (United), was a key constituent of the BJP-led NDA Government in the State and it must have adequate representation in the Cabinet. He alleged that the central leadership had recommended the name of three legislators to be inducted in the Cabinet but the Chief Minister, Arjun Munda, ignored the proposal by accommodating only two legislators of the party.

Besides him, the party high command had proposed the names of Radha Krishna Kishor and Jaleshwar Mahato for Cabinet berths. He would join the ministry only after Mr. Mahato was sworn in. Mr. Ramesh Singh Munda was sworn in on March 29 along with other four ministers taking the strength of the Cabinet to 11.

The supporters of Mr. Mahato had registered their protest inside the Raj Bhavan soon after the swearing-in ceremony by raising slogans against the Chief Minister and their party's senior leader and Speaker in the State Assembly, Inder Singh Namdhari. Police had to resort to a mild lathicharge to disperse the mob.
