A mahout tries to tether Bola after the tusker ran amok in Kollam city on Tuesday.
KOLLAM, APRIL 5. A tusker in rage ran amok for over 10 kilometres spreading panic through the city for almost an hour-and-a-half. The elephant did not attack anyone nor did it charge at the vehicles. At 8 a.m. this morning, the tusker Bola went into rage while it was tethered at the house of its owner in Thirumullavaram. Bola ran amok and took the seaside route to Tangassery, reached the wholesale market area of Kallupalam and finally reached Gopalaserry. It was brought under control and tethered at Gopalaserry. The tusker made an attempt to attack when attempts were made to rope it. The veterinary surgeon, K.K. Thomas, administered a tranquilliser shot to the pachyderm at the SN College Junction. The shot failed to have the desired effect on the elephant. As it neared Pallimukku through the National Highway, the senior veterinary surgeon B. Aravind administered another tranquilliser through the newly-devised pole syringe method. Bola was finally tethered by the veterinary doctors and a group of mahouts. The pole syringe is a new device designed by Dr. Aravind and it was tested for the first time today. The reason behind its rage is suspected to be anger over the two new mahouts tending to it in an intoxicated state.
