Kottayam
By Our Staff Reporter
KOTTAYAM, APRIL 5. There is need for introspection on the deteriorating situation on the environmental front, Aswathy Tirunal Gouri Lakshmi Bai has said. She called for local initiatives to create awareness to check the plundering of nature. Inaugurating a seminar on mangrove forests organised by the Vembanad Kayal Samrakshana Samithy here today, she said that time had come to put an end to the present situation where everyone was passing the buck when it came to ecological issues. If the present trend continued, the coming generations would hold us responsible for the crime, she said. "We cannot hold anyone else responsible for the massive destruction we are causing to nature," she said.
Globalisation
Referring to the impact of globalisation, she said it was subjugating the soul of the land to new colonial powers. "Earlier, we were subjugated through invasions. Now, we invite them to come and take away all our precious wealth," she said. It was not lack of rules or regulations that stopped the authorities from checking destruction of nature. It was lack of will that stood in the way of action, she said. She expressed concern over the indiscriminate filling of paddy fields. It would be difficult for anyone to imagine of a Kerala without its paddy fields, lakes and coconut trees, she said. K.G. Padmakumar, director, Kerala Agriculture University Research Centre, Kumarakom, delivered the keynote address.
