KOLLAM, APRIL 5. The Vigilance and Anti Corruption Bureau (VACB) today busted a sand-mining racket by a mafia based at Pathanapuram on the banks of the Kallada river. Three trucks, two country boats and 50 loads of sand have been seized by the VACB. All permits for sand-mining from the Kallada river has been kept under suspension since March 31 following drought. However, the VACB officials found that mining was active along the Pathanapuram course of the river. On seeing the VACB team, the labourers engaged in the illegal mining left the boats and escaped by swimming across to the opposite bank. VACB is probing into the alleged role by the local police and authorities behind the sand-mining.
